Peyronie's Disease Treatment Turkey
Expert surgical correction of penile curvature and Peyronie's disease at Andro Expertise, Istanbul. EAU guideline-compliant treatment by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sertkaya.
What is Peyronie's Disease?
Peyronie's disease is a condition in which fibrous scar tissue (plaque) develops within the tunica albuginea — the fibrous envelope surrounding the erectile tissue of the penis. This plaque causes the penis to bend or curve during erection, which can be painful and may make sexual intercourse difficult or impossible.
It is estimated that Peyronie's disease affects approximately 3–9% of men, though the true prevalence is likely higher due to underreporting. The condition can develop acutely following penile trauma, or gradually without any identifiable precipitating event.
Symptoms
- Penile curvature during erection (upward, downward, lateral or complex)
- Painful erections (particularly in the acute / early phase)
- Penile shortening or narrowing ("hourglass" deformity)
- Palpable plaque or hard lump along the penis
- Difficulty with sexual intercourse due to curvature
- Erectile dysfunction (in up to 50% of cases)
Treatment Options at Andro Expertise, Istanbul
1. Surgical Plication (Nesbit Procedure)
For men with curvatures of less than 60 degrees and preserved erectile function, the plication technique involves placing sutures on the longer (convex) side of the penis opposite the plaque, effectively straightening the curvature. This is a simpler procedure with a short recovery time, though it results in some loss of penile length.
2. Plaque Incision / Excision and Grafting
For more complex or severe curvatures (greater than 60 degrees), the plaque is incised or excised and a graft material is placed to reconstruct the tunica albuginea. This technique maximises length preservation. Graft materials include pericardium (Tutopatch), synthetic grafts, or the patient's own tissue.
3. Combined Penile Implant and Curvature Correction
For men with both Peyronie's disease and co-existing erectile dysfunction, the most effective single-procedure solution is penile prosthesis implantation combined with intraoperative manual modelling to correct the curvature. This addresses both conditions simultaneously, eliminating the need for separate procedures. Dr. Sertkaya performs this combined procedure with exceptional outcomes.
Congenital Penile Curvature
Unlike Peyronie's disease, congenital penile curvature (chordee) is present from birth and is not associated with plaque formation or fibrosis. It typically presents in young men and is treated with surgical correction — most commonly the plication technique — with excellent cosmetic and functional outcomes.
